The Great Prom Saga
by Christine B., friend
This is the story of how I ended up having one date, then two dates and then no dates to my senior prom and the valuable life lessons I learned in the process …
I discovered that a long-lost crush of mine was newly single and didn’t yet have a prom date. I agonized over the fact that if I hadn’t said yes to Brandon, I could have potentially been going to the prom with Nate. For two days, all I could think about was how I didn’t know how I would go on in life not knowing if Nate would have gone to the prom with me. So, in a very weak moment, I decided to ask Nate to the prom. I cornered him in the Student Council office never really thinking that he’d agree and suddenly, there he was saying yes, and there I was thinking, “hmm, now I seem to have two dates to the prom.”
The next night I got a call at home from Nate. I was so excited thinking that he was going to start asking me about dress colors, limos and flowers … but he had another conversation in mind. His first question to me was, “Did Brandon ask you to the prom?” I said, “Yes.” He asked, “Did you say yes?” I swallowed hard and said, “Yes.” He asked, “And then you asked me to the prom?”…”Yes,” I said. “Wow,” said Nate, “I had heard that from someone, but I couldn’t really believe it, so I asked Brandon myself, and he confirmed the story. I’m surprised and disappointed by you and I’ve given it some thought … I can’t go to the prom with someone who would do something like that to such a nice guy like Brandon.” I think I paused for a bit before pulling myself together to say, “I totally understand. You’re right, it wasn’t a very nice thing to do…thanks for calling me.”
Sometimes I still can’t believe this really happened to me. But it did. I learned that you should never make a promise to someone that you can’t keep. I also learned how important it is to stand up for others and to let people know when they have treated others unfairly. I am a better person thanks to Brandon, Nate and the Great Prom Saga of 1995.
